Kent Island is the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay, separated from the eastern shore by Kent Narrows and connected to the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay by the William Preston Lane Junior Memorial Bridge, also known as the Bay Bridge. | History: | Captain William Claiborne (Clayborne), who arrived in 1621 settled on this island and named it for his homeland of Kent County in England. Claiborne became involved in local politics and he was given a license to explore the Chesapeake Bay and to trade with the Indians. In 1631 he established a trading post on the island. (US-T121) |
