Fort Carroll - Maps, Driving Directions & Local Area Information

Feature Name: Fort Carroll
Category: Maryland physical, cultural and historic features
Feature Type: Cultural
Class: Park
Description: Located in the Patapsco River between the community of Sparrows Point and Hawkins Point, 11.3 km (7 mi) southeast of downtown Baltimore.
History: Named for Charles Carroll (1737-1832), a Maryland politician who signed the Declaration of Independence. Fort Carroll was designed to serve as one of the defensive forts protecting the City of Baltimore. Construction began in 1849 under the supervision of Robert E Lee who was Chief Engineer of the Baltimore Corps of Engineer at the time. A man-made island was constructed for the fort structure but financial and engineering difficulties made completion virtually impossible. Lee left as Chief Engineer when he was assigned as superintendent of West Point about 1852. The fort was semi-operational in 1861 but without adequate protective devices such as gun and canon placements. The fort was all but abandoned by the military in 1921 and was sold to a private owner in 1959. It now is home for nesting herons and egrets. (US-T121)
