History: | Explorer John Smith named this island for one of his crew members, Nathaniel Powell but the name has been corrupted over the years to Pooles Island. Today Pooles Island is part of the US Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground facility, and is not open to the public due to unexploded ordinance. (US-T121) |
