History: | Named for Brigadier General William Price Craighill (1833-1909) who was named the Baltimore District Engineer in 1865 and developed a plan for new dredging that would work with the currents of the Patapsco and Susquehanna Rivers. By the end of the 1800s the port of Baltimore had grown into a vital center of commerce due to the 600-foot wide and 30-foot deep channel. This access to the high seas brought more business into Baltimore. Craighill also served as the US Army Corps of Engineers, Chief of Engineer from 1895 to 1897. (US-T121) |
