Francis Scott Key Bridge - Maps, Driving Directions & Local Area Information

Feature Name: Francis Scott Key Bridge
Category: Maryland physical, cultural and historic features
Feature Type: Cultural
Class: Bridge
Description: Spans the Patapsco River and connects Patapsco River Neck, just southeast of Dundalk, with Marley Neck, 10 km (6.2 mi) southeast of downtown Baltimore. The bridge was completed in 1977 with over 180 feet of vertical clearance.
History: Named for Francis Scott Key (1780-1843), composer of the "Star Spangled Banner", who had witnessed the bombing of Fort McHenry. Key, a respected young Washington lawyer, and amateur poet, had been asked to help secure the release of a beloved Baltimore town physician. This physician, Dr Beanes, had saved the lives of many British soldiers. Unable to convince the British to release the doctor, Key and others in his group soon became witnesses to the assault on the fort by the British. It was in the dawning light of the next morning that they saw the great American flag still flying over the fort, and Key was inspired to write the poem from which the national anthem is derived.
